What is hyperglycaemia & how do I treat it?

We hear a lot of this word hyperglycaemia in Diabetes and today we shall cover quick ways to help pick out hyperglycaemia and know what to do at home.


What is hyperglycaemia?

This means high blood glucose. This is when your body has high levels of blood glucose in the blood stream due to a lack of insulin.


Causes of hyperglycaemia

Your body can have high blood glucose at any time despite being on treatment due to the following reasons;


- Unhealthy eating habits

- Lack of exercise

- Stress of any kind such as emotional stress, physical stress form injuries or an infection

- Your insulin/medication dose is not adequate

- If on mealtime insulin you are not carbohydrate counting properly


These are just some of the reasons, discuss with your doctor for more.


What are the symptoms of hyperglycaemia?

- Frequent urination

- Unquenchable thirst

- Feeling hungry

- Tired

- Confusion

- Wounds take time to heal

- Abdominal pain especially in children

- Weight loss especially if left untreated for long

- Coma


How do I treat hyperglycaemia?

-The best way to avoid hyperglycaemia is to go for your follow up checks with your doctor to ensure your medication is correct.

- Discuss your target blood glucose ranges first with your doctor to enable you pick out when your sugars are high

- try taking a walk or exercise

- adjust your insulin dose based on your correction factor discussed by your doctor

- drink plenty of water to promote your kidneys flush out the sugar through urine

- make sure you write down what you are feeling or if you are stressed or unwell. Do not make nay medication adjustments unless you consult your doctor and ensure if the sugars are too high to go to hospital.
