Dear All,
I hope everyone is keeping well and safe. In Kenya, we are all planning for the elections to be held on the 8th of August 2017, which is next week. There’s a lot of uncertainty around the elections and we are all hopeful and pray everything shall move on smoothly and peacefully. Due to this it was best to discuss about a diabetes emergency kit and what should be the items you put in advance in this kit.
Other than elections, it’s always safe to be prepared always so this kit will work for you during such times that you need to evacuate any area quickly. Always keep the kit somewhere you can reach it quickly and easily, as you would your personal documents.
List of items for your emergency kit
1. A glucometer and strips for at least one month. Also include an extra battery for the glucometer just in case.
2. A month supply of all your medication.
3. A month supply of your insulin pens and syringes/needles if you use insulin vials.
4. 2 pairs of clean socks
5. Ice packs preferably the gel type as they keep cool longer.
6. Emergency snacks. Snacks can be things like dry fruits or nuts, yoghurt, peanut butter, biscuits.
7. Glucose tablets or melted sweets in the event of hypoglycemia.
The above list is short and precise and should get you moving for a while. Of course, no matter what happens, always have contacts of an ambulance or hospital with you at all times. Diabetes is part and parcel of you, and no matter what situation, you should try your best to make sure you’re monitoring your sugars and taking your medication at all times to avoid further complications. Keep safe and remember.
