5 reasons you are not achieving your HBA1C goal

HBA1C is a blood test that looks at your diabetes control over a period of 3 months.

You must be wondering why despite taking your medication, eating healthy and exercising you are still not able to achieve your target. Below are some of the reasons:

1. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive illness

I always explain to my patients that as time passes the human body makes less insulin each year. Research has shown that your body actually looses 3-4% of beta cells (cells which give you insulin) each year.

Therefore, despite maintaining a healthy weight and taking medication regularly at some point your body will require changes in the medication to give you better control of your sugars. It is very important to stick to your follow up with your doctor for this reason

2. Eating healthy but too much

It is crucial to understand that no matter what type of foods eaten, portion control is still the key to good glucose control according to the American Diabetes Association. Speaking to our inhouse nutritionist will help you develop a personalized meal plan to cater for your body needs and maintain good sugars. You can also get a lot of information from this article on Diabetes UK to get you started.

3. You are not strength training

Part of the recommended exercise guideline by ADA includes 2 times a week of strength training. Strength training increases muscle mass which is important in insulin sensitivity. More muscle mass means better insulin sensitivity. Strength training also helps in better blood pressure control and weight loss

4. Stress

Stress stimulates high levels of counter regulating hormones such as cortisol which in turn raise your blood glucose. It also promotes insulin resistance. When stressed people are more likely to choose unhealthy eating habits and exercise less.

Speak to us if you need any help managing your stress and, in the meantime, try and get into an exercise routine such as brisk walking or yoga. Exercise helps release endorphins which are make me happy hormones.

5. Other medication

You can be on other medications that might raise your blood glucose. Medicines such as antidepressants or steroids can increase blood glucose. Especially now during the corona virus pandemic a lot of patients are getting steroids and therefore a detailed history is crucial for you to inform your doctor about. In such cases your diabetes care will need a different approach to achieve target.

A high HBA1c puts patients at risk of Diabetes complications and setting realistic goals with your doctor is the first step in the process.
